"Vice Pioneers": Salome

Salomé, by Henri Regnault (1870)

Salome with the Head of John the Baptist by Titian, c 1515 (Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Rome)

Salome (2003), by A.Voytovych

I visted The Met a few weeks ago to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit and while waiting in the line, I came across the Regnault painting above. I loved it even though I didn't get to really look into it or the subject matter. And that was it. Now weeks later, while looking up some info on stripping for today's "Vice Pioneers", it popped up again. Salome, the subject matter for this painting, is quite the character so I thought I'd hold off on the stripping. For today, we'll just delve into Salome and her Dance of the Seven Veils, which is considered by many the first striptease.

From Wikipedia: "Salome (Greek: Σαλωμη, Salōmē), the Daughter of Herodias (c AD 14 - between 62 and 71), is known from the New Testament (Mark 6:17-29 and Matt 14:3-11, where, however, her name is not given). Another source from Antiquity, Flavius Josephus's Jewish Antiquities, gives her name and some detail about her family relations.

Her name in Hebrew is שלומית (Shlomiẗ, IPA: [ʃlomiθ]) and is derived from the root word ŠLM (שלם), meaning "peace".

Christian traditions depict her as an icon of dangerous female seductiveness, for instance depicting as erotic her dance mentioned in the New Testament (in some later transformations further iconised to the dance of the seven veils), or concentrate on her lighthearted and cold foolishness that, according to the gospels, led to John the Baptist's death.

A new ramification was added by Oscar Wilde, who in his play Salome portrayed her as something of a femme fatale. This last interpretation, made even more memorable by Richard Strauss's opera based on Wilde, is not consistent with Josephus's account; according to the Romanized Jewish historian, she lived long enough to marry twice and raise several children. Few literary accounts elaborate the biographical data given by Josephus.

Biblical character
According to Mark 6:21-29 (Salome is not mentioned by name in this passage so reference is incomplete), Salome was the stepdaughter of Herod Antipas. Salome danced before Herod and her mother Herodias at the occasion of his birthday, and in doing so gave her mother the opportunity to obtain the head of John the Baptist. According to Mark's gospel Herodias bore a grudge against John for stating that Herod's marriage to Herodias was unlawful; Herodias encouraged Salome to demand that John be executed.

And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee; And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. And he sware unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom. And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist. And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. (Mark 6:21-29, KJV)

A parallel passage to Mark 6:21-29 is in the Gospel of Matthew 14:6-11: "But on Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him. But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist. And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took the body, and buried it, and came and told Jesus. (Matt 14:6-11, D-R)"

Some ancient Greek versions of Mark read "Herod's daughter Herodias" (rather than "daughter of the said Herodias"). To scholars using these ancient texts, both mother and daughter had the same name. However, the Latin Vulgate Bible translates the passage as it is above, and western Church Fathers therefore tended to refer to Salome as "Herodias's daughter" or just "the girl". Nevertheless, because she is otherwise unnamed in the Bible, the idea that both mother and daughter were named Herodias gained some currency in early modern Europe.

This Salome is not considered to be the same person as Salome the disciple, who is a witness to the Crucifixion of Jesus in Mark 15:40.

Salome in the arts
Salome has become a symbol for dangerous female seductiveness. Her dance before Herod, or with the head of John the Baptist on a charger have provided inspiration for Christian artists.

Despite Josephus's account, she was not consistently called Salome until the nineteenth century, when Gustave Flaubert (following Josephus) referred to her as Salome in his short story "Herodias".

Painting and sculpture
Salome and the Apparition of the Baptist's Head, watercolor by Gustave MoreauThis Biblical story has long been a favourite of painters. Painters who have done notable representations of Salome include Titian, Henri Regnault, Georges Rochegrosse, Gustave Moreau, Federico Beltran-Masses and Alexander Voytovych. Titian's version (illustration c.1515) emphasizes the contrast between the innocent girlish face and the brutally severed head. Because of the maid by her side, this Titian painting is also considered to be Judith with the Head of Holofernes. Unlike Salome who goes nameless in the Christian bible, Judith is a Judeo-Christian mythical patriot whose story is perhaps less psychological and being a widow, may not be particularly girlish nor innocent in representations. In Moreau's version (illustration, left) the figure of Salome is emblematic of the femme fatale, a fashionable trope of fin-de-siecle decadence. In his 1884 novel À rebours Frenchman Joris-Karl Huysmans describes, in somewhat fevered terms, the depiction of Salome in Moreau's painting:

No longer was she merely the dancing-girl who extorts a cry of lust and concupiscence from an old man by the lascivious contortions of her body; who breaks the will, masters the mind of a King by the spectacle of her quivering bosoms, heaving belly and tossing thighs; she was now revealed in a sense as the symbolic incarnation of world-old Vice, the goddess of immortal Hysteria, the Curse of Beauty supreme above all other beauties by the cataleptic spasm that stirs her flesh and steels her muscles, - a monstrous Beast of the Apocalypse, indifferent, irresponsible, insensible, poisoning.

Oscar Wilde's play
Salomé's story was made the subject of a play by Oscar Wilde that premiered in Paris in 1896, under the French name Salomé. In Wilde's play, Salome takes a perverse fancy for John the Baptist, and causes him to be executed when John spurns her affections. In the finale, Salome takes up John's severed head and kisses it.

Because at the time British law forbade the depiction of Biblical characters on stage, Wilde wrote the play originally in French, and then produced an English translation (titled Salome). To this Granville Bantock composed incidental music, which was premiered at the Court Theatre, London, on 19 April 1918.

Film
Wilde's Salome has often been made into a film, notably a 1923 silent film, Salome, starring Alla Nazimova in the title role and a 1988 Ken Russell play-within-a-film treatment, Salome's Last Dance, which also includes Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas as characters. Steven Berkoff filmed his stage version of the play in 1988.

In the 1950 film Sunset Boulevard, the principal character Norma Desmond is portrayed as writing a screenplay for a silent film treatment of the legend of Salome, attempting to get the screenplay produced, and performing one of the scenes from her screenplay after going mad.

IMDB lists at the very least 25 Salome/Salomé films, and numerous resettings of the Salome story to modern times.

Dance of the Seven Veils
In several notable works of Western culture, the Dance of the Seven Veils (usually described as danced by Salome) is one of the elaborations on the biblical tale of the execution of John the Baptist. Details enriching the story in later Christian mythology include providing a name for the dance, and describing the purpose of the dance as being to inflame King Herod with incestuous desire so that he would treat John as she wished.

Biblical account
According to ten verses of Matthew 14, John was imprisoned for criticizing King Herod Antipas's marriage to Herodias, the former wife of Antipas' "brother" Herod Philip I. Herod offered his niece a reward of her choice for performing a dance on his birthday. Herodias persuaded her daughter to ask for John the Baptist's head on a platter. Against his better judgment, Antipas reluctantly acceded to her request.

Possible origin in pre-Christian myths
The Dance of the Seven Veils is also thought to have originated with the myth of the goddess Ishtar and the god Tammuz of Assyrian and Babylonian lore. In this myth, Ishtar decides to visit her sister, Ereshkigal, in the underworld. When Ishtar approaches the gates of the underworld, the gatekeeper lets Ishtar pass through the seven gates, opening one gate at a time. At each gate, Ishtar has to shed an article of clothing. When she finally passes the seventh gate, she is naked. In a rage, Ishtar throws herself at Ereshkigal, goddess of the underworld; but Ereshkigal orders her servant Namtar to imprison Ishtar and unleash sixty diseases against her. After Ishtar descends to the underworld, all sexual activity ceases on earth. Papsukkal, the messenger-god, reports the situation to Ea, king of the gods. Ea creates a eunuch called Asu-shu-namir and sends him to Ereshkigal, telling him to invoke "the name of the great gods" against her and to ask for the bag containing the waters of life. Ereshkigal, having promised to grant Asu-shu-namir's wish, is enraged when she hears the demand, but she has to give him the water of life. Asu-shu-namir sprinkles Ishtar with this water, reviving her. Then Ishtar passes back through the seven gates, getting one article of clothing back at each gate, and is fully clothed as she exits the last gate. Her release is, however, granted only under the condition that she find someone to replace her in the underworld. Tammuz, Ishtar's husband, has been making merry while she has been dead, and so the goddess sends Tammuz to Ereshkigal."

News Spotlight: Decades Long Hotness

Jennifer Aniston is 42 and looks pretty damn good, but is she really the "hottie of the decade"? I think of her more as cutesy than a flat-out hottie, but to each her own. I will say, however, that pictures like the one above serve as validation for these kinda claims.

From The Celebrity Cafe: "It’s official: Spike TV wants everyone to know that Jennifer Aniston is hot – and has been for at least a decade.

At the Spike TV Guys Choice Awards, her Horrible Bosses co-star, Jason Sudeikis, presented her with the Decade of Hotness Award on behalf of the viewers of the cable network.

After being presented with the award, Aniston joked about her Friends-era fashion, saying, “A decade? That would put it at [2001], which is good because I had some sketchy looks in the '90s."

The 42-year-old actress said that she had a yoga regimen to thank for her continued good looks and physique."

Rihanna: "Man Down", Controversy Up

Rihanna is catching a lot of flack for her new "Man Down" video. I saw someone post a comment with a good point about why it's ok for violence to be shown in movies, but as soon as a musical artist puts it in a video, it's too much. I give her props for at least going against the grain and tackling a serious issue. And yeah, she looks really hot as usual.

"Sexpot of the Week": Pink

It's in the news today that Pink just gave birth to her baby so we can officially file her under the MILF pile. She has a "chick that kicks ass" sexiness opposed to an obvious sexy, which is so much more intriguing. Her body always looks amazing. She wears and does what she wants, curses, and makes no apologies for any of it. In sum, she's a real rock star and happens to look really good being one. And let's not forget the eye candy hubbie she gets to tote around as an accessory.

"Bad (Not Bad Ass) Tattoo": Getting Fingered

It takes a whole new level of douchebagness to get a tattoo like this. And if you're gonna go there, can't one at least get a talented tattoo artist to do it so it doesn't look like someone doodled with a pen? And whose legs and vagina look like that anyway? This design is a very good indicator that neither the owner nor inker of this tattoo have had the pleasure of seeing many real open legs in person. Gag.

News Spotlight: Kim as Wifey

So yeah, Kim Kardashian is engaged to her six-month boo Kris Humphries. It's fascinating that after all the black penis she has had in her, she has decided to commit to a half black one. Gotta give her points for switching it up. And while he is a professional basketball player, he can't be that rich so why the hell would he drop $2 million on an engagement ring? Oh, I know. Because now that what's her's is his, he can afford it. It's already being rumored she's going to make millions off this wedding. Here's to getting ready for another Kardashian reality show.

And I Quote...Bob Dylan Birthday Edition

Today is Bob Dylan's 70th birthday so below are some of his most notable quotes over the years.

“Being noticed can be a burden. Jesus got himself crucified because he got himself noticed. So I disappear a lot.”

“Chaos is a friend of mine.”

“Money doesn't talk, it swears.”

“To live outside the law, you must be honest.”

“Just because you like my stuff doesn't mean I owe you anything.”

“No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky.”

“All I can do is be me, whoever that is.”

“People seldom do what they believe in. They do what is convenient, then repent.”

“I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours.”

“A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”

“There is nothing so stable as change.”

“All this talk about equality. The only thing people really have in common is that they are all going to die.”

News Spotlight: Some Monday Catfighting

Everyone likes a catfight. It's especially amusing when it involves unlikely participants like January Jones and Zach Galifianakis. I like January Jones, but mostly because I've already had the preception that she would be a bit of a bitch in real life. I happen to like bitches. And to her defense, this is only his side and maybe he's really just annoying enough to encourage a "go away" request. If she's half the bitch I hope she is, she will sound off and respond to his shit talking.

From E! Online: "We can eliminate Zach Galifianakis from the list of January Jones' potential baby daddies—because he won't even pretend sleep with her.

The Hangover II funnyman is being brutally honest about a run-in he once had with the Mad Men beauty.

Take it away, Zach...

Galifianakis opens up about Jones in an interview with Shortlist. Asked by the interviewer about a complimentary comment Jones made to the site, calling him the most "naturally funny" man she'd ever met (sorry Jason Sudeikis), Galifianakis seemed completely baffled by her sweetness.

"That's really funny because, if I remember correctly, she and I were very rude to each other. It was crazy," he explains. "I was at a party—I'd never met her—and she was like, 'Come sit down.' So I sit at her table and talk for 10 minutes, and she goes, 'I think it's time for you to leave now.' "
And what did he come back with?

"So, I say, 'January, you are an actress in a show and everybody's going to forget about you in a few years, so f--king be nice' and I got up and left. And she thinks that's funny?"

But he wasn't finished yet.

Galifianakis tops it off by adding that if a script demanded he do a sex scene with the actress, he'd wouldn't want any part of it.

"I wouldn't want to. I'd hate it," he said. "I've only had to do a few of those things where you have to kiss and stuff. It's so embarrassing."

Guess that means no maternity gifts from the actor. Now back to who that baby daddy is..."

"Bad (Not Bad Ass) Tattoo" : A Star is Born

Just thinking about the pain this woman went through when getting this done hurts my soul. Not sure how many sittings it took, but it's probably safe to say she invested hours upon hours of agony. Furthermore, I have two points about this being a cover-up. One, you'd wonder just how fucked up the original tattoo is for someone to resort to this. And second, this is such a cop out for a cover-up tattoo. Cover-ups usually work around the original tattoo to create something new and interesting. Throwing globs of black ink over the tattoo as a solution is hardly imaginative. But it did work I suppose.

News Spotlight: Staub and Circumstances

Ok so if you're into raunchy reality tv, you're probably aware that the Real Housewives of New Jersey returned last night. And with a bang. The Jersey crew never dissapoints as this return included a dozens involved brawl appropriately placed at a baby's christening. All that aside, the thing I am most amused with is the fact that Daniel Staub, one of the previous stars of the show, is now stripping at Scores after refusing to return. And in amused, I mean saddened. If you wanna shake your tattas for a crowd, it certainly is your right. But Staub is 48 and every once in a while rights have to be revoked.

"The Hard Sell" : Taboo In Advertising

This New Zealand Autotrader billboard depicting two dogs looking out the window and using a play on the word "bitches" did not amuse some folks. It seems the main offense of the ad is people could not see the dogs in the window and when the words were read, people assumed it was a sexist rant. Autotrader didn't wait for a ruling against them in the matter. They decided to just take the billboard down to appease the bitching public.

News Spotlight: Celebrity Baby Name Fuckery

Celebrities are known for cray cray baby names. The newest addition is Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Jarecki's new baby boy. Name: Bear Blu. Status: WTF. I'm all about creativity and uniqueness when it comes to labeling (I actually think the name is kinda adorable), but only when it involves oneself. These babies have no say in the matter and while the parents are off the hook after the name is given, the kid has to spend the rest of his/her life explaining what Mom and Dad were thinking--or drinking. Poor little cub.

"Monday Man Candy": Chris Hemsworth

When I saw the previews for Thor in the movie theater, right away I thought Chris Hemsworth was delicious. Then I saw more and more billboards and ads for Thor and decided not only was he delicious, but yummy enough to become an actual fav of mine. And so he is. Every bulging muscle of him. He's only 27 (which is much younger than I usually like 'em) and his first movie role was only two years ago, but he has potential to be a years long obsession. Thor opened this weekend with $66 million so he is likely to get plenty of roles for a while. The more movie screen time, the more eye sugar.

"Bad (Not Bad Ass) Tattoo" : Not So Sexy

There is no evidence that the owner of these feet and tattoo is not a gorgeous, sexy vixen who turns heads wherever she goes. She just may be a fox. Feet are interesting like that. A really ugly person can have pretty feet and a really attractive person can have some dogs. These aren't the worst of feet, but they aren't exactly pretty (definitely not "sexy") and putting descriptions like that on a foot at all is a bold move. But enough about my rant about feet (is a fetish brewing?). This about the tattoo. And the fact that it is ridiculous and ugly. And that most people who get permanent markings about how sexy they are do not live up to expectations. That fact alone indicates this one is probably not a sexpot.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

A.K.A. Another reason to get shitfaced.

These ads from British tobacco company Hamlet Miniatures made defenders of dwarves very upset. The ads show dwarves finding joy in smoking their cigarettes while not being able to participate in activities people of normal height can. Hamlet Miniatures claims they got feedback from dwarves and the the dwarf community on how to take on the ads and that they are not making fun of them, but rather pointing out the regular challenges they face everyday. Despite that defense, the posters were ruled offensive and ordered not to be shown again. Hamlet Miniatures had no intentions of running them again anyway, they claimed, so apparently no harm, no foul.

"Monday Man Candy": Prince William

Prince William has always had a douchey frat boy look about him in my opinion. But it goes without saying that he has been a heartthrob and the catalyst of many a young woman's fantasies for years so I may be in the minority on this one. There are few things that make a man sexier in the eyes of women than money and power--the money he's got covered, the power increases with time (and deaths of course). Being that he is finally getting tied down this week and absolutely everyone is talking about it, it seems fair to make him the Man Candy of the Week. And he is much better looking that his pops so the English monarchy is at least evolving in eye candy appeal.

"Bad (Not Bad Ass) Tattoo" : Put Babby in a Corner

Neck tattoos are hard to pull off even if it's a good tattoo. Most tattoo folks agree that it's a place you should only get tattooed if you are very submerged in the culture. It's considered an "earned" tattoo spot after most other body parts have been tatted already. So if a bad tattoo is put on a neck, well now that's just a shame. Oh, and if it is bad and happens to be what appears to be mispelled, well now that's just a fucking sin.

News Spotlight: Lady CrayCray

Gaga is making people talk about her like usual. She debuted the album cover for "Born This Way" this past weekend and people aren't so impressed. It is very strange, but it never ceases to amaze me that people are shocked when she pulls something.

From Rolling Stone: "Late on Friday night, Lady Gaga tweeted the album cover for her eagerly anticipated new album Born This Way. It seems safe to say that the artwork, which depicts the singer's head and arms merged into the front of a motorcycle, was not anything like what anyone could have imagined. Though some fans assumed that the incredibly bold and silly cover was a joke, Gaga followed that tweet with another that showed her holding a printed copy of the cover, as if to prove that it was real.

Though the response from Gaga's audience has been fairly negative so far, with several fans and detractors rushing to create parody images over the weekend, the badass biker look might make more sense when the album arrives in stores. As Rolling Stone reported in February, a few of the songs confirmed for the record lean hard on huge guitar riffs and heavy metal bluster. This cover may be Gaga's way of letting her fans know that she's embracing the most defiant aspects of rock stardom on this new disc."

"Dirty Joke" : No Pain, No Gain

A man took his pregnant wife to the hospital. The doctor looked her over and told them it would be a rather difficult delivery. He offered to let the couple try an experimental procedure. The woman would be connected to a machine that would transfer part of the pain to the father of the baby, thus reducing her own. The man quickly agreed. The doctor warned him, though, that there was a slight bug in the machine that caused it to amplify the pain sent to the father by ten times, and if the pain became too much for him to bear to let the doctor know.

The doctor turned on the machine and watched the man. The man said he felt absolutely fine and he could take more. The doctor turned the dial up to 40, 60, 80, and finally 100% of the pain, times ten. The woman delivered the baby painlessly and the doctor stared at the man, astonished at how he could not even flinch with that much pain brought upon him.

The couple took the new baby home. There, on the front step, the mailman lay dead.

"The Hard Sell" : Taboo In Advertising

This 2007 Tom Ford ad is an example of taking "sex sells" so far that it's kinda comical. What better way to sell something to straight men than putting the object dead smack in the vicinity of a woman's vagina? After receiving complaints about the ad, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), ruled in favor of Ford. The ad was published in GQ magazine and the ASA cited that even though the ad is provocative, it is in line with content of the magazine it appeared in and therefore is not likely to cause offence to readers. Other fashion companies have certainly pushed much further in the years since this ad was published so the shock value is pretty limited.

"Sexpot of the Week" : Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj has grown on me. When she first exploded on the music scene with her "Black Barbie" persona, it seemed a bit much. She seemed to be a media whore chasing Lady Gaga's over-the-topness. But as time passed and the more people's songs she appeared on, the less forced it seemed. And love her or hate her, she is the only female rapper in years that has sold a lot of records and made a helluva living. If you've witnessed her lyrical skill, you may be aware that she actually deserves it. As for her being sexy, she's not the first female rapper to play the sexy card--but she has added her own colorfulness to it. The most lovable part of her "sexy" is that she spends most of the time scowling, making crazy faces, and lending attention to her self-diagnosed multiple personalities.
