"The Hard Sell" : Taboo In Advertising
This 2007 Tom Ford ad is an example of taking "sex sells" so far that it's kinda comical. What better way to sell something to straight men than putting the object dead smack in the vicinity of a woman's vagina? After receiving complaints about the ad, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), ruled in favor of Ford. The ad was published in GQ magazine and the ASA cited that even though the ad is provocative, it is in line with content of the magazine it appeared in and therefore is not likely to cause offence to readers. Other fashion companies have certainly pushed much further in the years since this ad was published so the shock value is pretty limited.
