"The Hard Sell" : Taboo In Advertising

These ads from British tobacco company Hamlet Miniatures made defenders of dwarves very upset. The ads show dwarves finding joy in smoking their cigarettes while not being able to participate in activities people of normal height can. Hamlet Miniatures claims they got feedback from dwarves and the the dwarf community on how to take on the ads and that they are not making fun of them, but rather pointing out the regular challenges they face everyday. Despite that defense, the posters were ruled offensive and ordered not to be shown again. Hamlet Miniatures had no intentions of running them again anyway, they claimed, so apparently no harm, no foul.
